Is Your Switchboard Up to Scratch?

Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system — it controls and protects the power supply to every light, outlet, and appliance. But like any part of your home, it doesn’t last forever.

If your switchboard hasn’t been checked in years, it may not meet current Australian Standards, and that could put your family, property, and appliances at risk.

🧯 Why an Old Switchboard is a Problem

Many homes across the Central Coast still rely on old fuse-style switchboards with ceramic fuses, asbestos panels, or no safety switches at all. These boards were designed for a time when households only had a few basic appliances — not today’s power-hungry air conditioners, EV chargers, and home offices.

Here’s what that can mean for you:

  • ⚠️ Higher fire risk from overloaded or deteriorated connections
  • No protection against electric shock if RCDs (safety switches) are missing
  • 🕯️ Frequent tripping or blown fuses when multiple circuits are loaded
  • 🧱 Asbestos meter panels that pose a health risk if disturbed
  • 🟤 Undersized or corroded earthing conductors, which may fail to carry fault current safely — leaving the installation non-compliant and unsafe

🔌 What a Modern Switchboard Should Include

A compliant, modern switchboard will typically feature:
RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overload) – these combine overload and electric shock protection in one device
Surge protection devices (SPDs) – guard against power surges and lightning
Properly sized and labelled earthing system – essential for electrical safety and compliance
A clean, non-asbestos meter panel
Neat wiring and labelling for easier maintenance and upgrades

All of this ensures your system meets AS/NZS 3000:2018 (Wiring Rules) and insurance requirements.

🧩 How to Recognise a Safety Switch

Not sure if you already have one?
A safety switch (RCD or RCBO) can usually be identified by a test button marked “T” or “Test” on the front of the device.

✅ When pressed, the power to that circuit should trip off immediately — proving the switch is working.
⚠️ If you don’t see any test buttons on your switchboard, or if pressing one doesn’t trip the circuit, your board may not have proper RCD protection and should be inspected urgently.

🧰 Signs It’s Time to Upgrade

You should have your switchboard checked if you notice:

  • Flickering lights or frequent tripping
  • A burning smell around the board
  • No test buttons or safety switches visible
  • Old ceramic fuses or metal enclosure
  • You’re installing new loads like air-conditioning, a hot tub, or EV charger

These are all signs your switchboard may need an upgrade or at least a professional inspection.
